How to Get More Sleep Apnea Patients Into Your Dental Practice

Jul 23, 2020 | Healthcare

Right now, the global sleep apnea device market is anything but sleepy.

A Grand View Research report published in March valued it at $5.9 billion in 2019. In addition, the market is expected to experience a compound annual growth rate of 7.4% between now and 2027.

The report further notes that awareness of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the prevalence of sleep apnea worldwide, the aging of the global population, and a growing number of insurance companies covering sleep apnea devices, are all forces shaping this rapidly-expanding market.

Sleep Apnea Patients

Close to 18 million people suffer from OSA. In fact, it’s the most common sleep disorder, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. And that number will only increase as our population continues to age.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, 10 to 20 percent of patients tell their primary care doctor they’re having serious sleep issues. What’s more, 30 percent say they’re experiencing insomnia. And the Mayo Clinic evaluates and treats nearly 60,000 people with sleep disorders each year. Unfortunately, for some, not getting a good night’s rest poses a serious health hazard.

So as more people familiarize themselves with sleep disorders, the need for related treatment and medical devices will create an opportunity for medical professionals, including dentists, to expand their caseloads.

An Opportunity for Dentists

In 2017, the American Dental Association officially noted dentists play an important role in caring for sleep apnea patients. To begin with, they can screen patients for OSA by identifying symptoms, such as excessive daytime sleepiness and mouth breathing.

A dentist may offer oral appliance therapy to children and adults suffering from mild or moderate sleep apnea. Dentists typically recommend this if patients will not use a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine to help them breathe at night; or cannot tolerate the device for various reasons.

Sharing Your Sleep Apnea Knowledge

If you’re a dentist not promoting your sleep apnea services, you may be missing out on a great opportunity to expand your practice. Some ways to market yourself include:

  • Display booklets or pamphlets in your office on the subject,
  • list sleep apnea on your waiting room television screen along with your other services,
  • offer informational articles about sleep disorders on your website, and
  • start a conversation about it on your Facebook page.

Americans are waking up to the reality of sleep apnea. Furthermore, they’re realizing there are ways to treat this potentially life-threatening condition. There are people in your area who can benefit from your knowledge and experience, collaborating with other medical professionals.
